About the Artists
Steven Parkhurst: I have been interested in the visual arts from an early age and have always dreamed of the artistic life. All through my professional career days I practiced drawing, did fine art photography and dabbled in multi-media collage. I re-energized my creative talents taking classes at The Midland Center for the Arts, later joining the faculty, teaching ceramics and beginning drawing. I now concentrate on oil painting at my Flat Frog Studio in Midland, Michigan.
I paint abstract landscapes/cityscapes and industrial interpretations. I am inspired by archetypical forms, and the interactions of those forms. These archetypical forms are used to construct the places where we live and work. We are surrounded by our constructions, yet they seem to stand alone without us. I encourage the viewer to make their own interpretations. While I am painting it is just the paint, the subject at hand, and me.
Stephen Grewe remembers the smell of chemical odors from his father’s darkroom and his floodlights for family photos. Since receiving a Kodak Duaflex in elementary school, Stephen has been taking photos.
For twenty years, Mr. Grewe has been serious about photography. He uses an antique Linhof 4×5 view camera. Thinking about the composition and how he takes pictures are the advantages he finds when using the Linhof. In addition to taking the photographs Stephen has his own darkroom and does all of his matting and framing.
Mr. Grewe has studied photography with excellent teachers including Armin Mersmann, S. Preston Jones, Charlie Cramer and John Sexton.
Photography basics and darkroom technique are classes Mr Grewe teaches at Midland Center for the Arts.
