Small Island by Andrea Levy 2004
This story takes place in London in 1948. A Jamaican man, Gilbert Joseph, joined the RAF during the Second World War to fight against the Nazis. When he returns to London, his wife joins him and they board with Queenie Bligh. Queenie’s neighbors aren’t happy that she is providing housing to Jamaicans (read: people of color). But things really heat up when Queenie’s husband also returns from war. Andrea Levy handles the weighty themes of empire, prejudice, war and love with a lightness of touch and a generosity of spirit that challenges and uplifts the reader.
