Raised in Oklahoma, Elaine McCullough moved to California to teach; but it was the rebellious 1960's so she soon changed direction. She knocked around San Francisco for a while, tended bar, and fished for crawdads in the Sacramento River Delta. After a decade or so she went back to school, earning her MA at California State University, Sacramento, and her PhD at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall, she spent a year in Russia as a Fulbright Scholar. Then she returned to Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan; there she taught writing, linguistics, and literature for 30 years. Now she is retired, living deep in the North Woods, where she shares a sprawling cabin with her many rescued animals. Currently she's preparing to publish FunStruct Grammar, which she created to get her writing students up to speed fast on sentence structure; and she's finishing her trilogy, American Archipelago, of which Sleight of Eye is the first book.
